Dear NFTY Northwest,

Shalom! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Becca Varon, and I have been elected 2005-2006 Social Action Vice President of NFTY-NW. This year's nationwide NFTY Social Action theme has been declared to be R'fuah Sh'leimah: Repairing the Mind, Body, and Spirit. Throughout the coming months, NFTYites across the United States and Canada will strive to better both the public health system and the quality of life of those within it. I feel it's important to both raise awareness about current health issues and demonstrate that, although the problems can be grievous, participants can work directly towards a solution in a very tangible way.

In this light, NFTY-NW will be participating in the 19th Annual Seattle AIDS Walk on September 10 - it's our unofficial first NFTY event of the year! This benefit for Lifelong AIDS Alliance raises over $500,000 every year. Almost 9,000 people with HIV/AIDS live in King County, and more than a quarter don't know they're infected. Lifelong is a great organization which helps people find testing, counsels them to reduce risky behavior, offers culturally relevant and age-appropriate information to people at risk, and provides everything they need to stay safe. It also helps patients find a doctor, learn about their medication so it will be as effective as possible, choose food that will help them stay healthy, and continue or find insurance coverage. Lifelong's experienced case managers assist patients with housing and food, helping them to locate resources and maintain or improve their quality of life.

NFTY-NW's goal for this year is to raise $1000 through this walk. I know we can do it if we work together. It's a cause that truly deserves our support, and it's not hard to ask a few friends and family members for small donations (you have all summer!) If you can't make it, I encourage you to help sponsor somebody else on the team.

Thanks for your interest. I'm looking forward to an event that's fun AND really does help make a difference.

If you have any questions, please contact me. I'll be in Israel and on Mitzvah Corps until July 10, but I'll be happy to provide information when I get back.

Enjoy your summer!

B'shalom,
